One of them (Virgin) uses LOGIN the other uses CRAM-MD5... I don't
think "offer" is quite the word to use for Virgin's smtps on port 465,
you're just meant to know that's what it wants you to do.
Ah - try using the "swaks" tool to talk to it. This will give
the encrypted connection; it should offer you AUTH LOGIN (or
whatever) once you say EHLO to it. This is how the "automatic"
works - exim parses the EHLO response to pick from the configured
authenticators.
