I'm not 100% sure, but i don't think it'll be a problem.
People here regularly do visa runs to the closest country, not their
home country.
I got my visa for Russia when I was in Ukraine - I'm american.
I doubt if you can get a visa so far ahead of time, but maybe you can.
What I would do though is check the prices at the Russian Embassy in
France and in the States. It's possible the prices are vastly different.
Also, a hint that has helped me several times, because I think that
visa offices are running a scam: tack on 2 weeks on either end of your
actual travel dates. If you will be there from 1 Jan - 31 March, then
tell them 15 December - 15 April. The reason I do this is that on no
less than three occasions, my visa application was only completed 1-2
days before leaving, even though it was submitted long in advance (at
least a month!). What they would then tell me is "We got your
invitation letter (or whatever) today, but to prepare the visa in time
for your trip (tomorrow, day after tomorrow), you'll need to pay the
express fees, which were upwards of $300.
