Re-applying would indeed be pointless and a letter might not do any "good," but 
 that's beside the point.

The point of a letter to the ambassador is to pick a bone, to grind an ax, to 
give a piece of one's mind about it -- otherwise, no one's the wiser and will 
not even be aware there 
is a problem.
