Moscow is as all other big metropolies in the world. There are some bad quarters with bad neighbours, other ones are real calm and residential. City center is very safe, even during nights. I have been living in Paris for 7 years and I feel myself more safe in Moscow then in Paris. This especially concerns metro. In Moscow there are several policemen on each metro station, day and night. You know, people here are wearing furs and Louis Vuitton on the streets and nobody agresses them ... When I came, I was very afraid of criminality, I avoided to go back home at night, etc. Now, when I know the city and the places not to go, I really enjoy Russian capital! Ask your employer to pay you 2 000 - 3 000 USD rent for an appartement and you would find a flat in a city center and enjoy Moscow as many other foreigners.

Does anyone know of any bad neighborhoods in Moscow? Granted the city as a whole is less safe then cities like Tokyo or Helsinki, but I am not aware of any specific neighborhoods that are significantly more dangerous then others such as it is in many US cities. I lived in the Washington DC area for some time and there are clearly areas that are best to avoid at night or even in the daytime for that matter. I think it would be interesting to hear from any other people on the list if they have heard that there are 'dangerous neighborhoods in Moscow" or if not so dangerous maybe a bit more dangerous then others? Hi Expats- I have been offered 2 jobs and am currently trying to decide between them! One is in Moscow and the other is elsewhere! They both pay about the same and include the same types of benefits (free apartment, discount on language lessons...etc) as they are actually with the same company! The only difference is the location...Moscow or another city in Europe. I don't know much about Moscow today...(I have a limited historical perspective from history class a million years ago)! Can anyone provide me any insights to help me decide? and possibly give me a comparison on safety to some other major cities in the world? I have heard it is kind of like New York or Chicago - there is crime, but if you use the normal precautions (ie don't visit bad neighborhoods at night alone) you should be ok? Thanks!
