I recently looked into this and from what I could find: you may get your visa 
renewed as an American, in London.  Unfortunately it takes a much longer time 
than for EU citizens.  I believe the timeframe is 14 days as opposed to 1-3 for 
EU CITIZENS.  The Russian consulate in London has the information on their 
website.
