No, the compile is no different.  Actually, if you DO a "make modules;
make modules_install" under 2.0.36 even without specifying anything as a
module, you'll still end up with a couple modules if you enabled PPP
support in the kernel.

The PPP compressors are ONLY built as modules and that hasn't changed
any between 2.0 and 2.2.
