Hi Tom,

Yes indeed. I'm running Mandrake 5.3 on an old IBM ThinkPad 701 CS, the
model with
the folding keyboard. I've got 40Mb's RAM online, as well as a 540Mb HDD and
a
PCMCIA network card. From time to time I also use a friend of mine's PCMCIA
modem to dial in to work. It works beautifully, albeit it being a 486 DX4 75
it
won't win any performance prizes! The bottom line is that it works well, and
that
is what counts. However, before you buy a notebook first make sure that the
video
chipset of the model you're interested in is listed in the chipset list on
the
XFree86.ORG site. NeoMagic is well supported, as is the various incarnations
of the
Chips chipset favored by some manufacturers. My notebook only supports
640x480, but
that is a limitation of the actual screen. I have a 800x600 virtual desktop
size and
I'm running that at 256 colors. With the newer generation notebooks you will
most
definitely get better performance.

Have fun!

Regards,
Jan Henkins
