I have a multiple boot system. I boot NT 4.0, Windows 95, Mandrake 5.3,
Redhat 6.0. I was installing Mandrake 6.0 on it, and ran into some
trouble. I was able to get an install, but I was unable to get it to get
past the init 3 or init 5 stage. During install, X installed and
configured just fine.

I had skipped the boot disk the first time, so I re-installed with a
boot disk creation and booted from the boot disk. Same problem. I get a
message after "Creating /mnt/disk" that says "cannot execute
/etc/rc.d/rc".

I booted with the floppy, using "linux root=/dev/hdb2 init=/bin/sh" and
ran /sbin/ext2fs to clean up the /dev/hdb2 drive. I then used vi to
examine /etc/rc.d/rc and it looked ok to me. the permissions were r-x
across the board.

Does anyone have any ideas? Some more information follows.

bug

1. I have a 233mhz pentium mmx, and a 6x cdrom (memorex crw-1622). When
running a CD-R copy of mandrake, the first time through, it can't find the
cd in the drive. (It does not give the drive enough time to find the cd).
If I choose to look for the cd again while the cd light is flashing, it
finds it. I am running an ATX motherboard.

2. The install could find no linux partitions. It would not allow me to
upgrade. I am running the following:

/dev/hda1 FAT16 (NT, Windows 95, NT boot loader selects linux) 2 gig
    /dev/hda2 82 Linux / 1 gig, Mandrake 5.3 (festen)
    /dev/hda3 83 swap 64 meg
    /dev/hda4 82 linux /home 1 gig

    /dev/hdb1 FAT16 drive D:
    /dev/hdb2 82 Linux / 1 gig, Mandrake 6.0
    /dev/hdb3 83 swap 128 meg
    /dev/hdb4 82 linux / 1 gig, Redhat 6.0
