very similar experience on initial install.  could not even get system
to finish booting, it kept complaining that a file /etc/rc.d/ could not be
executed. I could force it to a root shell by doing "init=/bin/sh" on LILO
line.  I have yet to figure out what it is, and the people on this list
were stumped also. (I figured this by the silence.)

  mandrake 5.3 is _great_.
