Hm. But why doesn't Composer 4.08 crash on M 5.3 but does so on M 6? 
I think there is more involved. Maybe it's the new glibc. But if it is running
fine with you that can't be the main fault. Maybe the font server? Does your
xfs runs with the default configuration? I usually switch the positions of misc
and 100dpi fonts (it's a 19'' at 1280x1024 over here and I'd need a loupe for 75dpi
fonts). Since the Java bug is related to font path settings you never know what
else might be involved in here...
