Have a look in /usr/share/apps/kfm and a work around will come to you,
as to why it happens i have not been able to check yet

There could be several causes, pam controls these permissions via
/etc/security/console.perms. My local work around removes the audio
devices from pam's control and sets the ownership as root:users crw-rw---
and I add all the family to the group users. This gives the whole family
access to the audio devices at anytime.
Rpms are available @ ftp://jumpstart.netpirate.org/pub/mdk-test/
you'll have to add the users to the group, linuxconf can do this
or edit /etc/group (don't forget to rerun grpconv if your useing
passwd shadow).
the pam package is in cooker, the dev package with the modification got
lost i'll reupload it and it'll be on the mirrors within a few hours.
If no one has any complaints about this I'll be adding a group "audio"
and returning the audio devices to pams control with permissions
user_loged_in:audio crw-rw--- so it won't interfer with any exsisting
setups useing the group users.
