There are 2 ways. If your two computers have coax (bnc) connectors, you
run a coax cable between them, with 50 ohm terminators at each end. Give
each machine an ip address. One would be ip address 192.168.100.100, the
other would be 192.168.100.200, netmask for both is 255.255.255.0. These
ip addresses are arbitrary, but are derived from the list in the RFC that
specifies ip addresses that won't show up on the internet.
If you have the RJ45 type of connector on the machines, you must buy
what is called a hub. Hubs are rather inexpensive now, around $30 US for
4 ports. Buy two standard 10BaseT cables and plug each machine into the
hub. Set up the ip addresses specified above.
(Note: you can forego (not use) the ethernet hub if you use what is
called an "uplink" cable used to connect two hubs together. You plug one
end into each machine. Instant network.)
Samba and telnet and other things are for future learning. in the
windows machine, you would type "ping 192.168.100.100 (assuming that .100
is the linux machine) If you get replies, your network is set up and your
ethernet adaptor card is configured properly. If it doesn't work, you can
have about 100 different problems.
