Could you test this : when you see the very first screen of installation
(the one which provide you the choice between normal ("linux<ENTER>" or
<ENTER>) and expert ("expert<ENTER>") mode), try to boot with "linux
ide0=noprobe ide1=noprobe .... ide3=noprobre ide0=noautune ...
ide3=noautune" in order to disable any optimizations (UDMA, bus
mastering, ...)
At last resort try "linux ide0=slow ... ide3=slow ide0=serialize ...
ide3=serialize"
Replace "...." by the same for ide1 and ide2 as for ide0

You can get further information from
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/ide.txt.

Note that the simplest way to update is to use glint if you have
installed it with your previous distribution and to seek for new rpms on
cdrom.

At very last resort, you can do a "rpm -Uvh
/mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS/<NAME_OF_RPMS_YOU_WANT_TO_UPGRADE>" (like
glibc*, XFreee*, ....)

I hope this will resolve your problem.
