As I recall there was an admonition against probing when I installed a generic i740 in RH 5.1 after downloading the server from the Red Hat site.  I just gave the server the information, using xf86config, and then hacked on the XF86Config file until it allowed me more than 256 colors.   The Modelines had to be tweaked a little to make them work, mostly in the loop timing.

Hello fellow card holders,

I have installed the i740 server, and Xconfigurator/xf86config shows the
card as an option. The problem is, my card must be a crappy one (Micro Star
Internations), as it does not like being probed, and comes back as asks me
for clockset info as well as other things. refresh rates I can handle, but
the Clockset does not have an option for i740 or anything I can recognise.

My request is that you let me know what you lovely people have set for your
particular cards so that I might try them. At this stage I get a 160x120
screen or there abouts, with 16 colours(I think), so I can't do anything.

TIA

Regards
