I'm not sure if this is going to help, but I also had problems with my
CD-Rom when updating from 5.3 to 6.0. The change is that in 6.0 the
kernel uses DMA by default for CD-Roms, while in 5.3 it did not.

My problem was that my cd-rom was buggy and would crash the computer
whenever I tried to mount it.
I used the hdparm program to tell the kernel not to use DMA for the cdrom,
something like: "hdparm -d0 /dev/hdb" and it fixed my problems. Not sure
if DMA vs nonDMA is your problem though, but that is one change from 5.3
to 6.0 that I had to work around.
