Wow. Thanks for the great feed back all.  I was hoping of course to
be able to fix the current problem without the typical Microsoft fix of
reinstall.  But I can't trace the problem down at all.  

        The build is Mandrake 6.0 (I should have mentioned all this.. shame
on me.)
        
        I'll try to reinstall the package tonight upon arrival home and see
if that corrects the problem.  If not I'll harp on you guys some more. :)

Why dont you just download the qpopper source; compile; install it.
I am sure that would be much easier then re-installing the whole system.
What password scheme are you using (/etc/pwdb.conf)
