Dunno about the first one.
For ftp, ensure that you use a valid login name and password when you
ftp to the linux box. "Anonymous" won't have permission to write
anywhere!
Either that, or create a folder that has permissions so that any user
can write to it.
This question probably should have been just for the "newbie" list...
but don't quote me.
