Right...I had EXACTLY the same problem trying to run Printtool from
a console window after SU-ing from a non-priveleged user. The
solution is as follows:
xhost +localhost
su

Do that in EXACTLY that order and everything should be fine. I think
it's just complaining that it can't find the root X-console. :-)
