It would be awkward with a parallel port as a dumb terminal,
although there may be some utility out there to do so. Most
dumb terminal emulations will use the SERIAL port, and it is
easy to configure your servers to use a serial port as a
console port instead of a local monitor and keyboard.
You may also consider using ethernet. If you want to take the
server off line, you can use a crossover ethernet cable to
make a direct connection to your laptop's network card. In
this case, just telnet or ssh into the box. This is what I
do for my remote boxes...they do not even have a video card in
them.
