just an idea: using parallel port and so-called "laplink" cable would be
possible, too - you should be able to establish PLIP (parallel line interlet
protocol) connection between your laptop and your other host. Then you can use
that connection for telnet etc. Some information is in PLIP-HOWTO.
I myself did not succeed with this exercise (yet), but as I understand many others do.
