[expert] KDE event sounds not playing

Hello all;

After trying unsuccessfully to configure the sound on my IBM ThinkPad
380ED under Mandrake 6.1, I decided to byte the bullet and purchase the
OSS. So I bought it and installed it. It works very nicely. I can select
all audio files (i.e .wav files) that came standard with Mandrake 6.1
and play them via "media player" app.

However when I go under the "K" menu and select Settings->Sound->System
Sounds and select any of the .wav files there and click the "Test"
button nothing happens. This is the case with "enable system sounds"
enabled or disabled. The same .wav file however when clicked in KFM
plays fine with "media player" or "X amp".

Any ideas as what might or might not be going on?
