As long as your sendmail knows about it's own network and understands
that the machine you are sending from is local (and therefore legal), you
can retain the in built anti-relay measures. 
The best way (imho) is to enter the IP addresses of allowed hosts
(or networks) into /etc/maildb/relay-domains (as specifed in sendmail.cf)
