In a Linux terminal window do:

fdisk -l

This will report to you on your entire partitioning layout

Partitions are either primary (maximum of 4, numbered 1..4) or Logical (no 
limit, numbered 5..n).

All the logical partitions are located in a single extended primary 
partition (leaving only 3 other useable primary partitions), and Linux 
numbers logical partitions starting at 5.  The extended primary partition, 
although Linux names it, is not addressable.
