Any new ATAPI should work. I use Memorex-2216 without recompiling kernel in
Mandrake 6.1.
I think CD-Writing HOWTO in even latest Mandrake 6.1 distribution is old
version. Please make sure to check latest one from net.

It just updated its content and tells you how not to recompile kernel to use
CD-R.
