You can do it two ways. Sendmail will usually put the
mail in /var/spool/username Each user will have one file,
and messages just get concatenated to the end of it as they
arrive.
To do anything with this file, you need either an IMAP/POP3
server or a program that will deal directly with the spool
file. For instance, pine will do this.
Typically, if you are using a Unix/Linux program in the SAME
computer your mail server is on, you do not need POP3/IMAP.
Most programs, including Netscape, will handle mail spools.
In most instances, however, you may wish to set up the POP3
or IMAP server. This will retrieve mail from the spool and
send it to you over the network. Typical programs that work
with POP3 are Netscape, Pine, Elm, Eudora, etc. Note that
many programs can work with the spool file AND POP3, so you
havea choice there.
fetchmail works like POP3, but a totally different protocol,
although it can also work with POP3 servers. Typically what
fetchmail does is contact the server computer, get the mail
and then put the mail in a spool file in the client computer.
In other words, it copies your mail spool from the server to
your computer. You need, at the client end, a mail program
that understands mail spools.
Mandrake, RedHat etc come with pop3d. There are several
available. Take the default one. Be aware that in the past
IMAP had serious security holes, but I understand they are
now plugged. Get a late model version. The RedHat and
Mandrake pop3d daemon includes imap. If you want to disable
imap, do so in /etc/inetd.conf and HUP the inetd daemon.
