Dear friends: Am too tired after a night of downloading (just 90 minutes), installation, organizing desktop, etc. The printer problem, as Jose Sanchez suggested, was caused by the switchbox that connects my two computers. With the printer cable connected directly to the computer, Mandrake had no problem configuring it perfectly. I tested it out in printtol. Perfect. I then added the swithbox and once again tested printtool and everything is working perfectly. In fact, printed out a whole document. Only problem that remains is that I cannot get a queue message (and therefore a dequesing message). When I do a lpq, I get: "no entries." The DISPLAY problem also disappeared when I entered the correct command in .bash_profile. Otherwise, Mandrake is lovely and all my RH rpms installed perfectly. And, oh, the FTP problem was one of those unnervingly simple problems in Linux: I typed /linux/Mandrake/6.1/Mandrake when I should have left the last Mandrake off and just typed "/linux/Mandrake/6.1" Same as in Red Hat, you type 6.1/i386 but you don't type Red Hat after it because that' s the directory the install is looking for. Somebody on the Mandrake list suggested this. First time I did this (at 8 p.m.) it was a total success. My thanks to a list member whose name I cannot recall because of my frantic state. On the whole,I am very pleased. By the way, here is something that might be of interest to some of you: the rpm update function (that some have said does not work) does in fact work PERFECTLY. But you have to log out of KDE (no need to reboot), just log out and log back in as root. In root, the update functions perfectly and I was able to add five current updates. All my thanks to everyone for your wonderful help and encouragement during this crisis. Benjamin -- Benjamin and Anna Sher Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sher's Russian Web http://www.websher.net
