Here's what I did: (which, sadly, will not help you with an install)
1) Install Mandrake 6.1 - being sure to turn PCMCIA off at boot time as part
of the set up
2) Download an install the latest PCMCIA source
3) Compile new kernel (or at least PCMCIA portion) from updated source tree
FWIW - no one ever had any response to my PCMCIA issues
