I actually decided to try stopping X properly, stopping everything else
I had running, logging out and back in, however this resulted in my not
being able to run pine either as my normal self nor as root. No response
or error, just a flashing cursor after I typed "pine"<enter>. Same
effect when I attempted to use "startx" to restart my session! I
actually had to reboot!
