To get quickier answers time through the modem line with X11 (not VNC), you
can use DXPC (http://ccwf.cc.utexas.edu/~zvonler/dxpc/).

You have to compile and run it on both the server(s) and the dialup client :
it will compress on the fly the X11 messages for you.
It won't be a very CPU eating process on the server/client and it will make
you gain a lot of bandwidth.

I had tried it a long time ago, just for testings, so don't ask me how to
make it work : I don't remember anymore : read the docs on the web site!
