Allrighty sound fans,

Here's the problem:
I've got a project requirement here at work for a voice-over-IP application.
The folks want to have real time chatter as they conduct a demo, so they need
some means of going full-duplex. As we all know, the OSS/Free stuff that's in
the kernel just doesn't get it done.

My first thought was to get the full blown OSS drivers from 4Front, but they
didn't seem to work for me (ESS 1869, onboard in Compaq Deskpros), even though
they claimed to have support.

That left me looking at ALSA. I successfully compiled the alsa driver, and the
alsa libs... Alsa-utils crapped out on me when I ran the configure script.
The error I get is:

---Paste---
checking whether the C++ compiler (c++ ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C++ compiler cannot create
executables.
---End Paste---

The ALSA documentation says that if you get this cryptic error, check to see
that you have the libstdc++-devel package installed. First time through, I
didn't, so I installed it and tried it again. I am still getting the same
error. Has anyone managed to get ALSA compiled and working on their system?
What is the secret?
