I''ve got an odd problem. Having installed mandrake on my new K7, I wanted
to give my old Dell optiplex (with integrated 3com NIC) to my wife. It had
had NT4.0 and had networked successfully with the mandrake box. So, I
scrubbed NT and installed win98. After configuring tcp/ip, I discovered
something odd. There are 6 hosts on my /29 subnet. A print server, the
mandrake box, a vmware NT host, my kids win98 box and the dell. Here's the
odd thing: the linux box can ping any host except the new dell win98 box,
and the dell can ping any host except for the linux box. The only way I
could get them to communicate was to put the dell on a different subnet,
forcing them to communicate via the gateway (a cisco router). I've tried
tcpdump, and regardless of which way I am trying the ping, I just see ARP
requests, with no replies. Any ideas?
