This one was from a few weeks back;
I am running a mostly 24/7 cable-Modem
with static IP and L-M 6.1.
A change by my ISP caused my remote access
to die every few hours as if I had
a dynamic IP without running DHCPD or PUMP.
I had not had to run those services before,
with the paticular service my ISP provides.
Even logging out and back in or rebooting
would not fix the problem. Only rebooting
into M$ then rebooting into L-M again
would get me going for a few hours more.
After repeated emails and phone calls
to my ISP/Cable modem Provider and
talking to half-a-dozen people I finally
got a guy in tech support who runs
Linux-Mandrake at home. !HooRay!
The gist of it was;
Within 5 minutes of describing my problem
This person said not "Oh I dont know, we didnt
really change anything, or "Uh, I only know NT",
but "Hmm that sounds interesting, let me check
something out".
Giving him the MAC # on my cable modem ;
(a COMPORT 21) he discovered they had tacked
on some kind of Net Bios Source IP Filtering
on my unit to prevent I think it's Ip Spoofing.
REMOVING IT DID THE TRICK !!! As simple as that.
Anoter case for checking with ISP as to their
"Linux Literacy". So thanks again to Civileme
and Axalone and the others who sent help and ideas
and yes it was the "ISP" as Civileme thought.
Finally a Problem solved, (and it wasn't my doing
for a change)!~!! :>)
Now lets see where was I with all those questions?!
