Yes, that's definitelly most annoying 'feature' [1] in
Mandrake Linux I discovered so far (some module messing up,
but that's OK :-)
Check /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit (the end of the file) or just
simply remove the unwanted icons from /etc/skel/Desktop
[1] - It's probably a feature, and not a bug, as the IT industry
claims for such annoying features/bugs.
