What X server are you running?
Have you read the notes for that server? (to check on options or fixes)
Have you tried other X servers (like generic SVGA)?
I found that even though there was an "accelerated" server for my laptop
chipset (in XFree 3.3.5) I had better performance with the generic SVGA.
