edit /etc/X11/XF86Config
In the Device Section corresponding to your video card add this line
immediately before or after the comment line
# Insert clock lines here if appropriate
Option "noaccel"
XFree 3.3.5 made all the Trident chipsets accelerated in 8,16 and 32 bpp
but not in 24. Xconfigurator does 32 if it can.
The drivers are good, actually. The cards and implementations of the
Trident video scheme often are not. They did not provide a course for
the accelerated feature. This shows as blink, fragmented text or frames,
or black-on-black depending on the chipset and the implementation
thereof. 3DI 975, 3DI 985, and Cyber 9525 all work better in
non-accelerated mode where the implementation is weak. CyberBlade
implementations, even those on the VIA MVP4 on-card chipset, seem
unaffected. (For you windows fans the CyberBlade is reported as the
Trident 8400). I did mention this to the Cooker list and defaults are
likely to be different in 7.0 (i.e. noaccel for the chipsets with known
problem implementations).
Now please please do report back to the list. after trying this, because
this chipset is a newly reported one. We need to know if it fits this
same category. (How many people out there are saying, "Mandrake bleah,
stick with windoze," because this problem exists?) Trident Microsystems
is vary popular with the cheapie video card manufacturers.
