Interesting - my experiences have been just the opposite (currently
running 1024x768 @ 32 bits). I found that if I used XF86Setup and selected
a monitor it would work sometimes and not others. I also had a great deal
of difficulty switching between internal and external displays - I could do
it alright, but when I switched back to internal I always lost sync (got a
"doubled" screen - nice). Up until XFree 3.3.6 I also ran the generic SVGA
server (over the prescribed Mach64) because it performed much better. On
3.3.6 I do run the Mach64 server, but you still need to specify "sw_cursor"
to keep your mouse pointer from disappearing when the screen suspends....
ugh.

Here again, I've had the best results, regardless of distribution,
by compiling my own PCMCIA support independent of the OS install. YMMV

FWIW - I still $h!tcanned RH6.1 in favor of Mandrake after only a
day..... I _really_ like Oxygen (7.0b3), but it's really bloated (out of the
box).
