Hi....I've installed Mandrake 7 on three different machines now
and this problem exists on them all. The third install was on
my masquerade machine (I call it my modem server). My isp uses
PAP authenication. With Kppp an uppercase P needs to be
appended in front of the login name (not necessary with Windows
Dial-up-networking). This apparently clues in the answering
software that a ppp connection is being attempted.
Anyway, this computer has been serving as my modem server for a
couple of months using mandrake 6.1. Today I installed (not
upgraded) Air on it. After the installation, Kppp would not
make a complete connection and after several hours of fiddling
and talking with the isp's tech folks I reinstalled 6.1 and my
modem server is now back to doing it's job again.
The modem is on an a,b,c switch so I can use it on any of the 3
my computers, so I was able to test the problem on two other
machines. The problem doesn't seem to be one of a certain
hardware configuration as it exists on all three computers.
What happens is; it dials, connects, and then immediately hangs
up with an error message about my ppp daemon dying
unexpectedly. The below is in the log:
Jan 20 19:24:22 obi-wan pppd[1605]: The remote system is
required to authenticate itself but I
Jan 20 19:24:22 obi-wan pppd[1605]: couldn't find any secret
(password) which would let it use an IP address.
The isp tech says that their logs show me signing on
successfully and then immediately hanging up. The Kppp settings
are the same on the 6.1 setup that's working right now as they
were on the 7.0 setup that didn't work.
