Hi....thanks to everyone who responded to this thread.  I've not
yet tested any of the suggestions thoroughly, but will
eventually get back to the problem and do so.  Right now the
problem is temporarily solved by going back to Helios (6.1) on
that machine.  Also I'd like to add this one other untested idea
to the already submitted suggestions.  Downgrade to the
ppp-2.3.8 on the Helios (6.1) cd.
