Many thanks! I went ahead and stripped out all but 1024x768 at 60Hz, set
default color depth to 32, set all modes to 1024x768 in the screen sections,
disposed of vga16 and vga2, and voila` !  

Were it not for folk like you, I would constantly forget that the SVGA server
can be confused by trying too many modes.  As we agree 

Option "noaccel" 

is necessary.
