The following procedure works for me:
1. su to root
2. Enter command: umount /mnt/floppy
3. Enter command: mount -t ext2 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
4. Do whatever desired with the ext2 floppy.
5. To return to original setup: Enter command: umount /mnt/floppy
6. Enter command mount /mnt/floppy
7. Everything is back as it was - floppy setup to read vfat.
