Okay -- here is the problem:

The compile configuration entries that are relevant to printing are spread out
throughout the config file.

One is under "General Setup" (look for "parallel port support" and enable it --
I don't know why I missed this the four other times I combed through it).

That's the start -- the next thing is to enable "parallel printer support" under
"Character Devices" (now there's an obscure category).

Make these modular if possible. That's what I've done. The problem is now
solved... *sigh*.

I homed in on this by going into the specific source directory and running
"make" only for that directory. It would quit almost immediately, having not
compiled anything. I figured this had to be a configuration issue, so I went
through xconfig *again*, *line* by *line* (that was the only way to find it --
it seemed to be well hidden).

There's got to be a lesson in this somewhere for our intrepid gang of kernel
hackers. It's obvious that the kernel config is structured by programmer's
logic.

PS: I love this operating system - once it works, man, does it work!
