        have you a linux box near? have you the root passwd? yes? then run
tcpdum (maybe you need to install it) and use it to see if the 98box
transmits packets... and becarefull of what you see >:) if not, er... may
be the nic is misconfigured or something... dunnno. it's to far to reach.
