On the Debian machine, try the following:

Open a shell window.
su to root
Then

$ tail -f /var/log/messages

(assuming that is the path for your messages file)

Then try and establish the ppp connection, and watch what appears in the
console window where tail is running. You'll see an error (an error
which is silent to the console executing pppd).
