Ok. I took everyones advice and added the IP addresses 198.20.0.1 and 
198.20.0.2 to the host files of both computers. One address for one computer 
and the other IP for the other computer. I used the following command on the 
each computer:
pppd -detach crtscts lock <local IP>:<Other IP> 34800 &
Both went back to the command line prompt. I ran PS -A on the Mandrake box 
and saw the pppd running. I ran the ps command on the Debian box and the 
pppd immediately exited and was no longer running. I don't understand why 
the Debian box isn't holding the connection. All of the PPP software is 
there and the PPP and SLIP modules are present.
Can anyone help me with this?
