I'm in the midwest US about 50 miles from nowhere. I have two ISP's with T-1's but both servers are physically more than 75 miles from me. Because of lousy connections, I bought a USR Sportster 56k external that has the TI chipset. During heavy periods of net use I get slooow load speeds of 4.1 and frequently less if I'm downloading locally. During this time I often load use a mirror in Europe. When traffic is light I can consistently see a d/l of well over 6. A few rare times I connected at over 12. I've been computing a few years now and for my area, anything over 3.5 is almost a miracle.
