Jonathan....you can only have one append line per boot image. 
The line is placed where it should be by default and if there
is nothing to append than it looks like this:

append = ""

you can then add, in between the ""'s, any appends needed for
your setup, multiple appends are seperated by a space.  See
below:


boot = /dev/hda
timeout = 50
prompt
  message = /boot/message
  default = linux
  vga = normal
  read-only
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
keytable=/boot/us.klt
image = /boot/vmlinuz
  label = linux
  append = "hdc=ide-scsi mem=164M"
  root = /dev/hda5
 other = /dev/fd0
  label = floppy
  unsafe
