I installed Mandrake 7.0 on a laptop that needs the frame-buffer video
driver. I followed the instructions in the small manual and downloaded
the rpms for the kernel and XFree86 for frame-buffer and installed the
RPMs. I modified lilo and also modified the X-server config file by the
manual. I checked /dev and fb,fb0,fb1, etc. were in the directory. I
noticed in /boot that the kernel for fb was larger than the standard,
so I assumed that frame-buffer was compiled into the kernel as it was
built and not as a module.(?).
So I rebooted into the mdkfb kernel and all seemed well except it
asked me for "mode or"scan" so I used "0" for 80X25. Seemed a little
odd. When I startx , the X-server starts and then fatally dies with
the message "open_framebuffer failed to open /dev/fb0 ( No such device).
When I checked /var/log/messages, it says that modprobe couldn't
find module fb0 . using modprobe, I find that there is no module fb0
in the machine. I also wonder if using modprobe I should find an
"alias char-major-29 fb" type of entry? Can someone who has installed
the 2.2.14-15mdkfb kernel and it works please help me out?
