You may want to check the authentication protocol.  During install, I'm
pretty sure PAP was selected.  When I first tried connecting to my ISP
after install kppp did the same thing as you described.  I checked and
for some reason script-based was selected instead of PAP.  I changed it
to PAP and have had no problems since.
