Hello All,
answering my own inquiry on Promise Ultra66:
installation went without a hitch.
Another pleasant surprise: Partition Magic resize feature.
I took a risk of shrinking previousely installed NTFS partition
with Windows NT4.0 on it. As always, PMagic warns you that resizing
WILL destroy all data on the partition ( I am talking about that PM
that we see during install).
It did not destroy my NT partition.
hardware: PD440FX mobo
266PII
128MB RAM
2 Maxtor Must Die HDDs (60GB each:)
Yamaha CRW8424E CD-R
Matrox Mystique video card, 4 MB
eth0: SMC
eth1: Linksys
eth2: 3C509b (dreaded ISA)
ppd0: old dual ISA modem from Boca
I had the happiest installes with this rather old hardware set,
inluding FreeBSD and OpenBSD.
On some newer hardware I also encountered most weirdest
installation quirks other people reported. most frustrating
is that those were not recurring: every time it would be something
different. In my case 90% of those were caused by poor compatib
with Cirrus Logic AGP video chipsets.
I also think that Networking setup during install needs to be
fixed. It's a shame. networking is an
important part of any Unixoid's life.
