I guess I am still a newbie even though I have gotten as far as compiling
C++ and getting my cable modem to work. That was with version 7.0. I post in
this list as it probably has the best chance of having the expert needed to
help me. I would rather stay with Mandrake but it is getting impossible to
do since I cannot install the new version.
I have downloaded the Mandrake 7.1 iso images 3 times form 3 different
locations. I ran the MD5SUM and it checked out on both cd images.
I burned the cds with CD Writer Deluxe and got no errors doing it.
I installed and I get all the way to the last step which is configure x.
I get
An error occurred
Xfree86 - rpm not found
And of course I am now burdened with an install without a GUI.
I have also tried downloading the XF*.rpm files and running the install. The
install APPEARS to work but when I run
Xconfigurator it gives a FAST message about starting and then terminates and
x is still not configured. NO error messages..
Has ANYONE got a solution to this.
I have heard from others that have had this problem too.
I am not the only one..
I am almost positive that my cds are exactly what was downloaded which
checked with md5sums.
I have one more chance. I ordered the cds from cheapbytes. If that does not
work, it is either give up on Linux or go to a different distribution.
Too bad for Mandrake. I kind of liked what I saw in 7.0 but am not about to
put up with this much longer.
Any good suggestions ESPECIALLY FROM OTHERS THAT HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN would
be GREATLY appreciated.
